Sapphire
The sapphire is the same corundum as the ruby — except iron and titanium lend it blue here. At Mohs 9 it is the hardest gemstone after diamond, a classic for pieces worn a lifetime. In every colour but red it is called a “fancy sapphire”.
Key sources are Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Madagascar, Tanzania and — historically — Kashmir, whose velvety stones set the benchmark. Sapphire grows in metamorphic rock like ruby; alluvial finds are tumbled smooth and hardy by rivers.
In blue sapphire the tone decides: a vivid, faintly velvety blue without a grey cast is the most coveted. Fine stones are usually eye-clean. Heating to improve colour and clarity has been practised for centuries and is disclosed.
Sapphire accompanies September and stands for fidelity, wisdom and constancy — which is why so many royal engagement rings carry it. For the 45th wedding anniversary it is the traditional gift.
Very robust for daily wear. Lukewarm water and a soft brush suffice; for unfilled stones ultrasonic cleaning is generally safe.
Yes — nearly all of them: pink, yellow, green, violet and the sought-after pink-orange padparadscha. They are called “fancy sapphires” and are often rarer than blue.
A name of origin: stones from Sri Lanka are known for their light to medium, vivid blues and high clarity.
