Topaz
Topaz pairs a Mohs hardness of 8 with a glassy lustre few other gems reach. Naturally blue topaz is rare — the vivid market blue arises through established, disclosed treatments of colourless stones. The rare imperial topaz in orange-pink is a class of its own.
The great topaz deposits lie in Brazil, with further finds in Nigeria, Namibia and Sri Lanka. Historically the stone was traded at Zeilan and in the Red Sea.
Topaz often occurs in large, clean crystals of high brilliance. Watch the tone: natural blue is precious, the common blue is treated — always disclosed by us. The stone has perfect cleavage, so a clean cut and a protective setting matter.
Topaz belongs to November and has been regarded since antiquity as a protective stone granting strength and clear thought. Blue topaz traditionally accompanies the 4th wedding anniversary.
Because of its cleavage avoid knocks and never use ultrasonic cleaners. Lukewarm soapy water and a soft cloth suffice.
Colourless topaz is plentiful and can be permanently coloured blue through irradiation and heating. Naturally blue topaz, by contrast, is rare and considerably more precious.
The rarest colour variety: orange to orange-pink tones, named after the tsars’ treasures of Russia. It counts among the most valuable topazes.
