Emerald
The emerald is the rare, chromium-coloured member of the beryl family — and the only gem whose inclusions carry their own name: the “jardin”, French for garden. At Mohs 7.5 to 8 it is hard, yet its typical inner gardens make it somewhat more delicate than corundum.
The most famous deposits lie in Colombia (Muzo, Chivor), along with Zambia, Brazil and Zimbabwe. Emerald forms where beryllium meets chromium or vanadium — a geologically rare encounter.
In emeralds colour leads: a vivid, cool green. Perfectly eye-clean stones are extremely rare — inclusions are the fingerprint of natural growth. Oiling with colourless oil is a centuries-old, disclosed practice of refinement.
The emerald belongs to May and stands for hope and rebirth — Cleopatra already had emeralds mined in Egypt. The emerald wedding anniversary follows at 55 years.
Never ultrasonic or steam cleaners — they can strip the oiling. Lukewarm water and a soft cloth are the right care; keep perfume and household chemicals away.
The “jardin” forms as the crystal grows and is its natural fingerprint. Only remarkably clean emeralds are the exception — and rare accordingly.
Colourless oil fills fine surface-reaching fissures and calms the colour — an ancient, disclosed treatment that can be repeated.
