Opal
No gemstone moves with light quite like opal: the fire opal glows translucent orange-red, the bicolor opal holds two colour worlds in one crystal — and the precious opal even carries a floating play of colour. At Mohs 5.5 to 6.5 it is among the most expressive yet most sensitive of stones.
Fire opals come chiefly from Mexico, bicolor and Welo opals from Ethiopia, the classic black and white opals from Australia. Opal is hydrated silica and can hold up to 20 per cent crystal water.
In fire opal the saturation of the orange fire counts; in multicoloured opal, the play of colour — the faster and cleaner the colour patches travel, the more valuable the stone. Natural opals are rarely treated; disclosure applies here too.
Opal accompanies October. The Romans held it as the lucky stone par excellence; today it stands for hope and imagination.
No ultrasonic, no dryness or heat: opals can crack if deprived of water. Lukewarm water, a soft cloth, stored separately — and better to remove it when washing up.
The Mexican fire opal glows orange to red, translucent; the bicolor opal shows two clearly separated body colours. Both can carry a play of colour.
Briefly, yes — harmful are prolonged heat and dryness, which can draw off the crystal water. Remove opal jewellery when washing up or showering.
