Garnet
Garnet is not one variety but an entire family — from the classic deep-red pyrope through the raspberry red of rhodolite to the vivid green of tsavorite. At Mohs 6.5 to 7.5 garnets suit everyday wear and are almost always untreated: colour at an honest price.
Important deposits lie in Mozambique, India, Sri Lanka and Kenya (tsavorite); Bohemian pyrope has shaped the jewellery of Central Europe since the Middle Ages.
Depending on the variety, saturation (reds and oranges) or clarity (tsavorite) counts. Fine garnets are usually eye-clean, and treatments are rare in the trade — if one has been applied, we disclose it.
Garnet accompanies January and has always stood for constancy and loyalty. It traditionally belongs to the 2nd wedding anniversary and accompanied travellers as a protective stone.
Straightforward: lukewarm soapy water, a soft brush. Forgo ultrasonic cleaners for fractured stones.
No — garnet is a family of many colours: rhodolite shows raspberry red, spessartine glows orange, and tsavorite is vivid green.
Predominantly not: almost all garnets reach the market untreated. Any treatment would be disclosed by us.
