Aquamarine
The name says it all: “aquamarine” — water of the sea. The blue beryl spans colours from delicate ice blue to saturated ocean tone, and at Mohs 7.5 to 8 it is easy to live with and ready for everyday wear. Our Santa Maria grades rank among the most intense blues of their kind.
Important deposits lie in Brazil, Pakistan, Nigeria and Madagascar. The trade name “Santa Maria” honours the Brazilian find at Santa Maria de Itabira and today denotes especially deep blue aquamarines.
The deeper and clearer the blue, the more coveted the stone — aquamarine is usually of great clarity and often occurs in impressive sizes. A clean step or oval cut lets the blue read deepest. Treatments (heat) are possible and disclosed.
Aquamarine accompanies March. Sailors have always carried it for protection at sea; it is considered a stone of calm and clear words. Traditionally it belongs to the 19th wedding anniversary.
Straightforward: lukewarm water, a soft brush. Avoid prolonged sunlight and aggressive chemicals.
A trade name for aquamarines of especially intense, deep blue — named after the Brazilian locality that made such grades famous.
